Landing: 26 September 1996 @ 0813:13 EDT
Launch Info: Orbiter - Atlantis 104-17 Pad 39A KSC (MLP-1) - 14th night launch.
On 12 July, concerns with the STS-78 SRB J-seal burnthrought it was decided that this
flight would be delayed to mid-September in order to replace the already stacked and
mated SRB set with a set due for STS-80. On 4 September, due to the oncoming
Hurricane Fran, launch was delayed from 14 September (due 5:39 am EDT) to
16 September. Also, APU-2 failed during ascent, it was later determined that it's loss
would not affect the overall mission. Jerry M. Linenger (NASA-4) was John E. Blaha's
(NASA-3) back-up. Shannon W. Lucid (NASA-2) landed after 188:04:00:11, currently
the record for both a woman in space, and longest time by an American. In orbit, Cdr.
Valeri Korzun and Flt. Eng. Aleksander Kaleri had arrived 17 August 1996 on
Soyuz-TM 24.

12 July 1996 With the stacked vehicle still in the VAB, it was decided tht due to concerns over the STS-78 SRB burnthrough incident, the SRB set from this mission would be replaced by the set due to STS-80. The J-seal burnthrough was found to be caused by the use of a new adhesive and cleaning fluid. Since the already stacked and mated set for this mission utilized the same two materials the decision was made to destack and inspect this booster set to allow a clean waiver for future use.
