Grissom named his craft Liberty Bell 7. The second Mercury sub-orbital mission was
different only in that some unknown malfunction occured, and caused Grissom's Liberty
Bell
to sink. Although it was thought to be a fault of Grissom's, it was never proved as
such, and more than likely was not caused due to pilot error. However, unlike Shepard,
Grissom was not given a medal by the president in person, and this was felt to be in
direct relation to the sinking of the Liberty Bell
pre-shuttle missions. shuttle era missions.
